COBOL Software Engineer (H/F)

The COBOL Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and optimizes core legacy and transactional applications. This role ensures the continuous performance of main business applications while collaborating on modern migration and integration initiatives. - Analyze, design, and write high-quality COBOL programs in accordance with technical specifications and architectural standards. - Maintain and refactor existing batch and transactional programs to optimize system performance and modern operational workflows. - Develop and execute unit, functional, and integration tests to ensure data accuracy and core application stability. - Diagnose, log, and resolve software defects, performing root-cause analysis on complex production incidents. - Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams, business analysts, and database specialists to deliver technical improvements. - Document technical specs, program flows, and code modifications to ensure operational knowledge transfer and compliance.

Education & Experience: - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent IT qualifications. - Minimum 2 years of proven hands-on experience in COBOL mainframe development and legacy application engineering. Technical Skills & Tools: - Core Language: COBOL (Mainframe / Micro Focus COBOL). - Operating Systems & Interfaces: IBM z/OS, JCL (Job Control Language), TSO/ISPF, and SDS. - Database & Persistence: DB2, VSAM, and SQL query execution for batch processing. - Transaction Processors: CICS or IMS. - Testing & Utilities: Mainframe execution utilities, debugging tools, and version management solutions. - Methodologies: Knowledge of Agile or Waterfall software development life cycles and continuous quality practices. Soft skills: - Strong analytical mind, rigor, and meticulous attention to code quality. - Excellent problem-solving abilities and capacity to work under production pressure. - Strong team spirit, clear communication, and adaptable mindset for both short-term targeted tasks and long-term projects. French: Fluent / Native proficiency (Required for daily team collaboration and communication). English: Professional / Working proficiency (for technical documentation and international coordination).
